Answering Common Questions About Electric and Gas Appliance Repair

Appliances are a significant investment, and it just makes sense that you would want to take care of them. That care includes making sure they’re being repaired and maintained with expertise; but it also means knowing when you need to call a professional and when you can do things yourself. Below are some of the most popular questions we get asked when our clients are trying to decide how to take care of their appliances.

General Inquiries: Appliances St. Catharines

What kinds of appliances do you repair?

At Appliance Repair St Catharines we offer maintenance and repair service to most major brand washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, ranges, ovens, gas and electric stoves, and range hoods.

Maytag Service Canada has their own repair centre. Can’t I just call the manufacturer to fix my appliance?

You should always contact your manufacturer. If it is still covered by your warranty, they may be able to repair your appliance for free or for minimal cost. Or there may be a recall that you hadn’t heard about, which would make the repair the manufacturer’s responsibility.

The typical manufacturer’s warranty runs for two years. When your appliance is outside that time frame, you can still contact the manufacturer, but once the warranty is expired you will usually pay a premium for their repair service.

Refrigerator and Freezer Inquiries: Servicing and Repairing Appliances in St. Catharines

The sides of my refrigerator or freezer are sometimes hot to the touch. Is this normal?

It has to do with the way your refrigerator or freezer is built. Some models have part of the condenser coils running in the walls of the cabinet as well as underneath the appliance.

If the refrigerator or freezer has a forced air condenser under the unit and the coils are not cleaned, the sides of the refrigerator will be warm.

Also, if the ambient temperature of the unit is warmer than normal this could cause the side walls of the unit to be warmer than normal.

In most cases you will need to clean out the coils under the refrigerator. If problem persists call for service immediately or major damage may occur.

Oven Inquiries: Electric and Gas Appliance Repair Specialists

My oven temperature doesn't match the gauge. Is the problem with the gauge or the heating coil? And can it be fixed?

Use a reliable separate oven thermometer to check the temperature of your oven. If the oven is reaching and holding a consistent temperature, you’ve got an issue with the gauge. Most of the time we can calibrate oven temperature in the electronic section of your stove. In some cases an electronic part may need to be replaced.

If your oven is not reaching or maintaining a consistent temperature as measured by a separate oven thermometer, you likely have a problem with the heating coil. Call your appliance repair Niagara Falls specialists for service throughout the Niagara peninsula; we’ll get your oven heating properly.

Washer and Dryer Inquiries: Appliance Repair Welland

My washer or dryer is shaking when I run it and damaging my floor and walls. How can I get it to stop doing this?

The number one cause of shaking dryer and washers is too large of a load. Reduce your load size. If this doesn’t reduce shaking contact us for further solutions.

Why is my dryer making a clunking noise?

A slightly slower clunking noise might indicate an issue from the metal-to-metal scraping of worn dryer drum glides, worn belt, or the clothes baffle loose. If you notice clunking with nothing in the drum, you may have objects in the blower wheel.

My dryer will run, but it isn’t heating at all. What could be the problem?

Check the circuit breaker to make sure you have the correct power to the dryer. On some brands of dryer’s the motor will run, but will not heat.

The circuit breaker for the dryer is 240 volts and the motor requires 120 volts to operate. The remaining 120 volts is required to power up the element on an electric dryer.

My front load washing machine smells like mold, but I can’t see anything wrong with the drum.

There are washing machine cleaner products available which are safe for your machine and will remove most odours. Be sure to check your manufacturer’s manual to see whether a cleaning product is suitable for your particular appliance. If the smell continues, give us a call. There may be something lodged in the pump and hose. We will disassemble and clean the parts.
